Point of View in “Memento Mori” (graded)
1. What is the origin and meaning of the phrase “Memento Mori?” Research online and see what you can find. Then, comment on why the author chose this particular phrase for his story’s title.
Memento Mori is actually a Latin word which literally means “Remember that you must die” (Emma, 2011). This phrase originated in ancient Rome and in Christian contexts this phrase actually serves a moral purpose. In Christianity this phrase has been used to instruct a faithful human being to remain abstained from mundane pleasures and to focus on the afterlife, and with such focus, to emphasize on conducting actions which are morally right, and to lead the life wisely (Emma, 2011). In some other contexts the phrase Memento Mori has been used to denote any object that can remind a person about the inevitability of death and mortality. Going through all such definitions of Memento Mori, I can now understand why the author chose this phrase as the title of his story. As known, the central protagonist of the story actually tries to find out the killer who killed his wife but suffering from the ailment of short term memory loss, the central character could not remember how his wife was killed and by whom. Hence, to find out the killer he takes the help of different mementos which encompass objects that can remind him about the death of his wife and make his resolute to claim the life of his wife’s murderer. And it is this effort through which the author has tried to depict the relation between the phrase Memento Mori and the objective of the central character. The mementos in the story are serving the purpose of those objects which can remind a person about the truth and inevitability of death and in this context the inevitability of the death of the killer of the central protagonist’s wife. Moreover, the mementos also remind the hero about the death of his wife and this recurring notion of death has actually appropriated the selection of the story’s title.

Plot in “Memento Mori” (graded)
1. Discuss the plot of “Memento Mori.” What is the climax of this story? To what degree do you find the resolution satisfying?
A masterpiece of Nolan Memento Mori depicts the dilemma and confusion of Leonard, the central character of the story, who is suffering from a complex disease of short term memory loss. He is suffering from the agony and frustration that he is not able to recall the incident of his wife’s murder and hence, it is remaining to him as a mystery which only he can solve. Moreover, the ailment of short term memory loss has been rendered to Leonard by the assailants who actually killed his wife. The most spectacular part of the plot is the depiction of myriads of mementos through which the central protagonist is trying to find out the murderers of his wife. Through combining objects, notes, photographs etc into mementos, Nolan has tried to show the agonizing situation of a man who is in want of knowing his own past that he has forgotten. And though Leonard had been confined to a mental institution he makes a resolution to find his wife’s killer, after escaping, through combining the mementos and to ultimately kill the murderer and this resolution is quite appropriate for a man who has suffered through the immense agonies caused by the loss of the most beloved one.

Memento Mori as Literal
Consider for a moment that the title could be taken either literally or figuratively. In essence, we could either see the story as a memorial to Earl, indicating he has died, or as a sort of memorial to the man he was, a symbolic death.

Pick one of these and then find examples from the story to support the claim. For example, if you believe the story suggests Earl has actually died, what in particular leads you to this conclusion? Or, if you believe his death is more symbolic — loss of freedom — explain why the story supports this interpretation

I am curious about the “role playing”. How do you do that in the organization? Do you have meetings where people play different parts or do you go on retreats to build teams? I am also curious how a company fits that in to their busy schedule.
