Many hoped an investment by the current administration in clean energy would improve our electric grids and create the so called ‘smart’ electric grids that will increase the efficiency and operability of the nation’s old, inefficient system. On Oct. 27, 2009 this hope became reality when over 100 smart grid projects received federal funding to turbo charge the industry.

The smart electric grid is the 21st century electrical grid, it is best described as an electronically
controlled network of electricity delivery that monitors, protects, and automatically optimizes
the operation of its interconnected elements. The ultimate goal of the Smart Grid is to ensure
high levels of security and optimize efficiency, reliability, flexibility, and responsiveness in the
power-grid system required to support continued economic growth and to improve productivity
to compete internationally. Achieving this vision will require careful policy formulation,
accelerated infrastructure investment, and greater commitment to public/private research,
development, and demonstration (RD&D) to overcome barriers and vulnerabilities.
I believe the federal stimulus and wide spread implementation of smart grid are all actions that
will help foster usage of smart grids and assist in reducing vulnerability. However, it is important
to note that while technological advancements are necessary to meet future energy challenges,
focus must also be placed on fully understanding the technology (smart grids), and implementing
effective security strategies. “The Federal government must work with the private sector to
define public-private partnership roles and responsibilities for the defense of privately owned
critical infrastructure and key resources; and ensure that security standards are developed and
adopted to avoid creating unexpected opportunities for adversaries to penetrate these systems or
conduct large-scale attacks.” (NIST, 2010). WHAT WOULD BE YOUR RESPONSE FROM THIS QUESTION
