To what extent should technology pursue and then culture accept cloned babies and genetically modified babies – all in pursuit of a perfect baby. Yes, “should” identifies an ethics question.

A kind of genetic engineering happens in nature, with naturally occurring mutations and the dominance of certain strains. What is different about today’s processes and what makes them potentially dangerous and what should we consider natural and what is artificial?

You have joined a lab that has successfully cultured in the laboratory the first bacterium from Mars and you have determined its genetic material is DNA. The sequence of the genome has been determined and your advisor has enough money to invest in one type of genomic technology to study this organism. Pick a single technology you would advise her to choose to study the organism. Explain what the technology can be used for, what the benefits and limitations of the technology are, and outline a hypothetical experiment using the technology.

DNA microarrays
Proteomics
Structural Genomics
High-throughput genetics
Protein:protein interactions
Next generation sequencing

Explain the difference between using (1) selective media and conditions and (ii) selective enrichment for isolating microorganism for biotechnological applications. What is the advantage of using isolation systm that do not select for microorganisms as compared to systems utilizing selective agents or processes?

The main argument in the articles: “Lessen the Fear of Genetically Engineered Crops” by Gregory A.
Jaffe, and “Is Genetic Engineering the Answer to Hunger?” by Gerald D. Coleman is about the need to
meet with the ever growing demand for food and to provide for the developing countries that are
struggling with hunger.
However the question is, while trying to help others, are we hurting ourselves, our farmers, and our
general public? The few big corporations have ownership to the genetically developed seeds and meat.
The farmer no longer has the say. Farmers are no longer allowed to use their own seeds; they are not
allowed to save or make their own seeds. They are compelled to buy new seeds every season.
The other question is, while it is nice to help the countries struggling with hunger, are the genetically
produced foods safe? Are we really helping, or are we giving false hope by providing these countries with
modified foods that might lead to other health issues? Besides if the local farmers are having to face so
many issues, will these issues not create a problem for the other countries as well?
Some of the disagreements about biotech food involve the concept of “natural.” While defining
what natural or unnatural and artificial foods are, argue how one is better than the other. What are
the benefits of the type you support and what are the shortcomings or flaws of the other.
Support your argument with evidence coming from the assigned readings, as well as, the other
readings under the Biotech Agriculture and the Ethics of Food Production section in the Writing
Arguments textbook.
The section Biotech Agriculture and the Ethics of Food Production has a total of five
articles. I want you to use at least four of these articles to support your claim (any four).
You may or may not use the exact articles that were assigned for class discussion. However, you
cannot use any outside sources. Use only the articles in your Writing Arguments textbook.
Do not use any outside sources.
Defend your argument against rebuttal: [Rebuttal is an attempt to contradict or disprove an argument
by offering a counter argument or countervailing proof. A rebuttal is not automatically a refutation
