GM410 – Foundations of Professional Communication
Oral Presentation Assignment – Persuasive Presentation

Below you will find five documents:

1. The presentation assignment itself
2. A template to follow in creating an outline for your presentation
3. The topic choices for the presentation
4. Instructions for using Elluminate to record your presentation
5. The criteria that will be used in grading the presentation

Please read all of these carefully before our Week 2 phone conversation so that we can discuss it and I can answer any questions that you may have.

Note that, in order to record your presentation in Elluminate, you will need a microphone —regular or headset—for your computer, so if you don’t have one, you will need to purchase one. You should be able to get a fairly inexpensive one at an electronics store.

Assignment for Persuasive Oral Presentation

Background

Former Chrysler CEO Lee Iacocca said, “You can have exceptional ideas, but if you can’t communicate them, it’s as if you have no ideas at all.” So far we have been focusing on written communication, but oral communication is just as important in many work situations. Both informative and persuasive presentations are very important in the workplace, but the presentation that you will do in Week 4 will be a persuasive presentation. That is, you will imagine a particular audience and a particular situation in which you would need to convince that audience to believe a particular point or take a particular action.

Assignment

Choose one of the topics listed on page 3 below. Imagine a situation in which you would need to persuade a particular audience to take a particular position or action about this topic. Develop and deliver a persuasive presentation about 6-9 minutes long, using a PowerPoint presentation with at least six slides.

Steps in developing and delivering the presentation

1. In Week 3 you will create an outline of your presentation and post it in the week’s discussion area for feedback from me and your classmates. The outline should follow the basic persuasive pattern shown on page 2 below, though naturally adapted for the particular purposes of your presentation.

2. Once this outline has been approved, you should create a PowerPoint presentation based on this outline and including at least six slides. Post this PowerPoint presentation in the Week 3 discussion for my feedback.

3. Once the PowerPoint slides have been approved, you should begin writing the “script” for the spoken part of the presentation. Remember that PowerPoint slides serve only as “headlines” for the spoken part of the presentation. The spoken part of the presentation should develop the points indicated in the “headlines” on the slides.

4. In Week 4, following the instructions for using Elluminate on page 4 below, post your PowerPoint presentation at your Owner Link in Elluminate and record the spoken part of the presentation. Use your Playback Link to play it back so that you can see if you are satisfied with it, and if not, return to the Owner Link to re-record it.

5. Once you are satisfied with the presentation, email me to let me know. I will go to your Playback Link, view and listen to the presentation, and then, using the feedback sheet on page 5 below, I will post a grade and feedback in the Week 4 Oral Presentation Dropbox.

CHARLIE MOODY FLIPPED HIS JACKET collar up to cover his ears. The spray blowing over him from the fire hoses was cold and was icing the cars that lined the street where he stood watching his office building burn. The warehouse and shipping dock were not gone, only severely damaged by smoke and water. He tried to hide his dismay by turning to speak to Fred Chin. “Look at the bright side,” said Charlie. “At least we can get the new server that we have been putting off.” Fred shook his head. “Charlie, you must be dreaming. We don’t have enough insurance for a full replacement of everything we’ve lost.” Charlie was stunned. The offices were gone, and all the computer systems, servers, and desktops were melted slag, and he was going to have to try to rebuild without all the resources he needed. At least he had good backups, or so he hoped. He thought hard, trying to remember the last time the off-site backup tapes had been tested. He wondered where all the network design diagrams were. He knew he could call his network provider to order new circuits as soon as Fred found some new office space. But where were all the circuit specs? The only copy had been in a drawer in his office, the office that wasn’t there anymore. This was not going to be fun. He would have to call directory assistance just to get the phone number for his boss, Gladys Williams, the CIO. Charlie heard a buzzing noise off to his left. He turned to see the flashing numbers of his alarm clock. Relief flooded over him as he realized it was just a nightmare; sequential label and supply had not really burned down. He turned on the light to make some notes for himself to go over with his staff later in the morning. Charlie was going to make change to the company plans today.
Charlie sat at his desk the morning after his nightmare. He had answered the most pressing e-mail in his Inbox and had a piping hot cup of coffee at his elbow. He looked down at a blank legal pad ready to make notes about what to do in case his nightmare became reality.

What would be the first note you would write down if you were Charlie? Why?

What else should be on Charlie’s list? Why
