Write 1 and a half page letter addressed to both major presidential nominees for the upcoming election in November. Offer them advice about what you think they should be focusing on as they campaign across the country giving speeches. In other words, explain to them what YOU think are the most important problems facing the country, as well as what YOU think should be done about these problems. Start it off by addressing it to “Dear President Obama and Governor Romney.” Finish it with “Sincerely,” followed by a skipped line, then “A Concerned Citizen.” Remember, you are NOT being asked to write two letters—one for Obama and another for Romney. I only need ONE letter addressed to both men.)

Write the cover letter to accompany the questionnaire.
For the past five years Amy West has worked for Bill Jackson owner of a local chain of pet stores in the Albuquerque-Santa Fe area. Both Amy and Bill have been divorced for several years and seem to have adjusted to the “single life.” Over a casual lunch one day, Bill observed that, overall, his lifestyle was very pleasant, but he found it difficult to meet interesting, exciting, and compatible women. The singles bar scene just did not seem to provide the right atmosphere, and the kind of person he wanted to meet didn’t frequent “singles bars.” Amy echoed a familiar frustration when attempting to meet men. She also noted that dating services, particularly the online ones, seemed “too clinical.”
Bill decided to explore the situation a little further. He found that the number of one-person households had increased by over 20 percent during the last decade, yet the total population had raised only a fraction of that. Also, there are 3 million women in the 30 to 40 age bracket who have never been married. Furthermore, the divorce rate had increased substantially for this group.
Armed with these data, Bill decided that there must be many other single professionals people like Amy and him who would like to meet compatible singles. Thus, that Singles Dinner Club was born. The initial membership fee was $100, for which the member received the right to attend the club’s dinners. An e-mail newsletter was sent out every month detailing where the meals would be held (once a week), the price, and the menu. Bill chose four different types of restaurants each month, with prices ranging from $35 to $80 per meal. The price did not include cocktails, but was a complete dinner, from appetizer to dessert. Bill and Amy negotiated cost with restaurants and marketed up the discounted price by 30 percent.
Bill and Amy arranged the seating with name cards at each place to ensure popele saw new faces each week. To encourage mixing, a cocktail hour was held before each meal. Often groups would get together after dinner and go dancing.
In the first few months of operation, the club exceeded Bill’s wildest expectations. Four months after opening, memberships reach 550 persons. Bill had hoped to have 1,000 members after two and one-half years. Despite the initial success, several factors began to bother Bill:
1. The average attendance per week was only 42 persons.
2. The average age seemed to be about 45; young people came once and then did not return for months.
3. The women usually outnumbered the men three to one.
4. Some people had told Bill that they did not seem to be getting a good value for their money, which could be significant to the annual renewal time rolled around.
Bill decided that perhaps the club should branch out in new directions (e.g. guided tours, movies previews, dances, wine tastings, dancing lessons), but he was not sure what to do. He also hoped to address the problems just outlined.

Managers and workers write more in the 21st century than ever before in history. To ensure that writers reach their readers with their intended message, businesses and government agencies are finding it increasingly important to set specific, objective standards for clear writing, as we discuss in this week’s lecture. For example, see the Plainlanguage.gov site – one of this week’s featured sites – for information on clear writing efforts in government agencies. Being able to apply standards for readability is important to success in your career field, whether it is in the computer sciences, management, education, the military, or another field.

Discuss how you can measure whether your writing meets standards for readability such as those above. As you may know, you can use Word to determine the reading grade level of your document, for example.

Criteria – No word limit and at least one or two well-developed paragraphs.

For example, the Army’s correspondence regulation, AR 25-50 (in Doc Sharing), states – “Department of the Army writing will be clear, concise, and effective. Army correspondence must aid effective and efficient communication and decision making. Writing that is effective and efficient can be understood in a single rapid reading and is generally free of errors in grammar, mechanics, and usage. Refer to paragraphs 1–43 through 1–46 of chapter 1 and appendix B of this regulation and to DA Pamphlet (Pam) 600–67, Effective Writing for Army Leaders, for more information on effective and efficient Army writing. The standards contained in these references are the mandated Army style.”

The Session Long Project will ask you to read and identify the claims within it. You will then write a three-four page response to the article expressing whether you agree or disagree with the author. You will want to cite the article you have read in your essay. Again, this assignment is to give you some experience to continue writing argument, using third person writing (when warranted), and using APA format. Unlike the Case Assignment, you should include your opinion here, stating whether you agree or disagree with the author’s claims. Continue to use the reading material to help with summarizing, paraphrasing, and argument.

Expectations

Identify the Claim
Read: “99.9% of Proper Grammar is Obsolete” by David Wertheimer (from Digital Web Magazine) here (http://www.digital-web.com/articles/999_of_proper_grammar_is_obsolete/)

The case assignment asks you to read and identify claims made by the author. The idea is for you to practice finding claims or arguments that the author makes. To prepare you to make your own claims it is imperative to experience reading how authors make their claims. Likewise, you want to use third person throughout the response. In other words, you want to serve as a reporter of the information in the article. Pretend you are working for a news station and just reporting what the article says. Consider reviewing paraphrasing and summarizing in the reading material. When writing research, you will want to show that you are unbiased in your explanations of sources. Using third person can increase your ethos (ethical credibility) and show audiences that you have done your homework (your research) on the topic. To practice citing in APA style, please provide a reference list that contains the article you have read (cite parenthetically in the text and include the article on a reference list using APA format). There will be only one “source” on your reference list because we have not asked you to do further research for this assignment.

Expectations

Read the essay thoroughly
Write two-three pages that identifies and expresses the claims made by the author
Use the additional readings to learn about summarizing and paraphrasing
Use third person writing throughout
Cite the article in a reference list (you will only have one article on your reference list)
Submit your work to coursenet by the end of this module
